The use of piants for healing purposes predates recorded history & forms the origin of much of modern medicine. Many conventional drugs originate from plant sources e.g. Quinine (from Chinchona bark), Morphine (from Opium poppy).
Every culture on earth, through written or Oral tradition, has relied on the vast variety of healing plants for their therapeutic properties.
For example – The essential oil of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) contains 20-45% Thymol. Thymol is a powerful antiseptic and antifungal that is used in a variety of products. Before the advent of modern antibiotic oil from thyme was used to medicate bandages. Thymol for thyme is also used to treat respiratory infections. A tea made by inducing the herb in water can be used to treat Bronchitis and coughs.
POINTS IN FAVOUR
# The first point to make is that roughly half of today’s prescription and over the counter (OTC) medicines are derived from plants. New drugs don’t just get created in the laboratory. Scientists trawl through jungles, rivers, wetlands and other natural habitat they can find, looking for a New compound to test against all the sample virus and bacteria they keep for this purpose.
# Herbal remedies tend to produce fewer side effects than modern drugs, and can be more pleasant to administer ( well not in all cases some have very bitter taste ehn I told you ). Also many herbal remedies have multiple benefits, while most modern medicine focus on one particular symptom or set of symptoms.
# Although taking a little longer to act, it is far gentler on the body and overall result is more Holistic because the whole body is treated instead of just the symptoms.
# Additionally, many herbs contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that the body desperately needs.
You may decide to try herbal medicine for a number of reasons
* You have a chronic condition that cannot be treated, but at best managed, by conventional medicine.
*You are tired of the side effects of modern drugs.
*You have a set of symptoms that are undiagnosable by the mainstream medical system.
*You simply and intuitively believe that Natural medicine is more compatible with the human body.
Naturally anything that has an advantage would definitely have a disadvantage.
POINTS AGAINST NATURAL MEDICINE
* They offer little statutory protection because many are not regulated by the FAD or in our case NAFDAC.
* For prescription drugs pharmaceutical companies have isolated the “active ingredient ” in the herb or plant. In other words, you are getting exactly what you need and nothing more as compared to Natural /Herbal medicine.
In the end, there are benefits and drawbacks to both herbal remedies and modern medicine and those factors should be weighed on an individual basis. If you are thinking about using any herbal medicine, first get information on it from a reliable source.
Have a great week ahead
