Today is about the ” diamond in the rough- well its none other than shea butter”. Growing up as a yoruba girl I don’t think I knew anything about shea butter because my parents and grandmas are what they call The Alakowes. So I was exposed to the beauty of shea butter when I got older and I wanna share them with you.

Shear butter aka ori (would get the other names in subsequent post) has been used by our ancestors for different things but it just became popular and get this we have The American Shea institute. Its no secret that most cosmetic company now use the contains Shea butter phrase to make more sales even though it makes just 2% of the total component. Enough of the stories.
Shea butter is a solid fatty oil made from the nuts of Shea karite trees scientific name is Vitellaria paradoxa and it was formerly called Butyrospermum parkii . It begin to bear fruit after about 15-25 years of being planted.

Traditionally, Shea butter is extracted by people who pick the nuts, crack them, grill them and pound them. Shea butter is a solid at room temperature although it quickly liquefies right around body temperature. Since Shea butter is an all natural, it can vary widely in quality, appearance and smell depending on where it is produced from and how it is refined or extracted. The colour ranges from yellowish, cream and white.
You know the funniest part majority Shea butter in the world comes from west Africa. Although a more softer & smoother variety from East Africa (Uganda) is beginning to appear in the market.
Shea butter has a natural smell, which is not unpleasant to most people. The smell of raw or lightly refined West Africa Shea is nutty. Over time the smell of Shea butter diminishes. If Shea butter has no smell, it is probably old.

Burns are like the major home accident lets take a look at their causes, types, symptoms and my favorite part home/ natural remedy.
Burns are injuries to the skin and underlying tissues. Skin damage resulting from burns can be minor or can present a life threatening emergency, depending on the heat’s intensity, the total area of tissues burned and the length of exposure to the skin.

Majority of burns are flame burns since they are caused by fire. Contact with flame can cause direct injury to the skin and tissue.
Damage to the skin caused by hot object is called Contact burn. In such an instance, the burn is confined to that part of the skin that came in contact with the hot object e.g iron, cigarette.
Sunburn involve damage to the skin caused by UV rays, emitted by the sun.
Electrical burn is caused by electricity. The burns are widely deep and may cause severe damage to the skin and its underlying tissues.
Chemical burn occur when in contact with flammable gases or chemicals. That are serious and it is advised you see a Doctor.

Classification of burns.

Burns are classified according to the depth and extent of injury.
Burn depth depends on the layer of the skin that is damaged. Symptoms depend on the depth of damage.
First- degree burns
Involve the outermost layer of the skin called the Epidermis and such burns are superficial.
Symptom– cause pain lasting up to 2-3 days followed by the peeling of the skin over the next few days. The part of the skin affected is usually red in colour with blisters.

Second- degree burn
It affects some of the underlying layers i.e the dermis and Epidermis. This type of burn is also called Partial thickness burn.
Symptoms- The part of the skin affected is Red. Blisters are the first sign. As the Epidermis is destroyed, it begins to separate from the dermis. Fluid builds beneath it, causing blisters. Eventually, the blisters will spread into one another until the very thin Epidermis falls away, exposing the raw dermis underneath.
The victim begins to loose fluid, heat and the ability to block infection.

Third-degree burns
The injury extends to all the layers of the skin. The Epidermis and dermis have both been destroyed.
Symptoms– The victim has the same trouble with fluid loss, heat loss and infection that come with second-degree burn.

Fourth-degree burns
The part of the skin affected is black and charred. It involves injuries to the muscle or bones.

Home/ Herbal Remedy
HONEY- is commonly used for burns. And the covering of burns with honey has been shown to produce less scaring. Raw honey has wonderful antiseptic and healing properties.
* Diluted Vinegar – cover the burn area with a cloth soaked in diluted vinegar. Refresh the vinegar compress as often as needed, especially if the pain becomes stronger.
* Alone vera- apply aloe vera gel directly to the burn. Its soothing and rejuvenating properties will help cool the burned skin. Fresh inner fillets is preferred. Fresh alone vera quickly soothes painful burns with little or no scaring.
* Diluted Lavender oil -is also known to reduce pain and also prevent scaring. Lavender oil is oil of the essential that can be used directly on the skin without dilution. Everything should be done in moderation.
* Potato peels- provide moisture and also has antibacterial properties that help in healing and getting rid of burn scar.
* Lemon and tomato juice– can also be used to lighten and eliminate scars and burns.

Please do consult your Doctor for burns in the third and fourth degrees. Not all burns can be treated at home.

I hope I have been forgiven.
As always please feel free to drop your comments and suggestions.

Blood pressure is the amount of pressure that is exerted on the arteries of the body as the blood circulates round the system. The human body is so constituted there must be a balance between the contraction of the left ventricle of the heart and the amount of blood pumped out into the aorta. When the pressure that the blood exerts on the blood vessels is consistently and abnormally high, it is called HYPERTENSION, when it is consistently and abnormally low, it is called HYPOTENSION. Normal blood pressure at rest is within the range of 100-140 mmHg (top reading) and 60-90 mmHg (bottom reading). A blood pressure is considered 135/70 mmHg or 140/70 mmHg is considered normal. A blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg is considered slightly high. A blood pressure of 150/90 or 150/100 is considered severe.

There are two types OF hypertension namely, primary and secondary hypertension.
Primary hypertension has no apparant cause, it just occurs. This is the case in 80-90% hypertension cases.
Secondary hypertension is caused by an underlying disease such as diabetes or kidney problem.

*Heredity – from clinical observations, however, there is enough reason to conclude that hypertension runs in the family. Some other opinion insist that what is inherited is the tendency towards the sickness, not the sickness itself.
*Those brought up on high calorie diets are likely to develop hypertension. High intake of salts also leads to hypertension.
*Negative attitudes to life, hatred, envy, anxiety, excessive worry, are unhealthy mental attitudes. Persons in these states of mind are prone to severe hypertension.

Rarely shows any symptom and its identification is usually through screening, or when seeking healthcare for an unrelated problem.
Altered vision or fainting episodes.
Tinnitus (buzzing or hissing in the ears).

Homemade treatments
HONEY – can reduce pressure from the heart and it also has a calming effect on the blood vessels and hence it can help in reducing high blood pressure. People suffering from hypertension must make it an habit to consume 1 to 2 teaspoon of honey on a daily basis. It is a good idea to take 2 teaspoon of honey on an empty stomach in the morning.
Are one of the most amazing foods, when it comes to keeping us healthy as they have so many kinds of vitamins and minerals in their in the case if high blood pressure, the potassium in the banana works to lower the blood pressure. So eating 1-2 bananas a day can be fabulous for your health.
Regular use of garlic has been shown to reduce the blood pressure by 10-15%. That’s about 20 points for many people with high blood pressure.
Dosage– You can take garlic in the clove form, in the powdered form, minced form or even as paste. There is no fixed dosage.  There are no side effects of garlic, so you don’t have to worry about the excess of it unless you are pregnant.
Preparation – you can add it to food, but the best is probably eating it in the form of a clove.
It is recommended to eat fresh clove of garlic to reduce your high blood pressure. It seems to work better raw than in food in powdered form or paste.
Apple Cider Vinegar
This is a miracle cure for high blood pressure patients. ACV acts very fast, & you will start seeing a difference in your blood pressure within a week. You don’t need any medication for blood pressure with ACV.
Dosage– Take one full tablespoon 3 times a day for best results.
Preparation– If it’s too strong for you, you can mix it with a blissful of water. Buy a non pasteurized brand. A good one is Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.
You can also try to use the roots(cut) of Talinum triangulare (Yoruba- Gbure. English- water leaf) in 10 litres of water. Measure 10 handful of the root.
Dosage- 1/2 glass twice daily for 2 months.
Squeezing the fresh leaves of Ficus asperfolia called Epin in yoruba in water. Drink a glassful thrice daily.
And don’t forget cayenne  pepper.
I hope I have been able to do justice to the topic.
Has anyone tried other remedies that work? Please feel free to comment.

Piles/ Hemorrhoids popularly called jedijedi is prevalent among the young. I don’t think there is a house in Nigeria without a herbal concoction for PILES. Let’s examine the science of PILES.

Pile also called Hemorrhoids, but contrary to the popular believe that it is caused only  when you take refined or sugary foods in excess is not true. We would later look at the causes of piles.
Hemorrhoids could be described as masses or clumps of tissues within the anal canal. These masses of tissue contain blood vessels and their surrounding, supporting tissues is made up of muscle and elastic fibres. Although most people think Hemorrhoids are abnormal, it is only when the Hemorrhoids cushions become too big that the Hemorrhoids can cause problems and be considered abnormal. In that case, we say that a person has Hemorrhoids or swollen veins in the rectum or anus. The type of Hemorrhoids you have depends on where they occur first.

Types of Piles/ Hemorrhoids
Internal Hemorrhoids– occur inside the anal cavity and usually cause painless bleeding at the end of a bowel movement. Sometimes, an internal hemorrhoids may stretch down until it bulges outside the anus and it is called a Prolapsed Hemorrhoid. A Prolapsed hemorrhoid will go back inside d rectum on its  own. If it does not happen, u can gently push it back inside or consult a Physician.

External Hemorrhoid- occur outside the anus. It can be felt as a bulge in the anus. Although they can be itchy and painful.

Most common clinical feature of pile includes passage of blood along with stool.
Acute pain, itching and irritation around the anus.
Sensation of fullness, usually described as feeling the urge to have a bowel movement even when there is no stool. Straining worsens the discomfort.

Taking refined and sugary foods such as biscuits, ice cream and soft drinks.
One of the cause(main) is straining when a person is trying to have a bowel movement. This may happen if someone is constipated or has diarrhea.

Drinking 2 to 3 glasses of warm water on rising and before bedtime. Emphasis on warm water.
Taking of foods rich in fibre such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits among others.
Lemon juice – saturate a cotton ball in a glass of freshly squeezed lemon juice. While this may cause a mild burning or tingling sensation during the first application, you have the assurance that it will quickly go away.
Banana- while this fruit is widely recognized for being an effective laxative, you should know that consuming boiled ones for two times each day can also help in eliminating Hemorrhoids. Just make sure that you boil ripe banana.
Ginger and Onion- Rubbing onion with water and consuming it works effectively in obtaining relief from the problems. You can also use ginger to naturally treat the problem by mixing it with mint(efirin) and lime juice and a tablespoon of honey.

You can also boil 2 Irish potatoes for 10 minutes. Eat the half boiled potatoes, peel inclusive. Do this every night for 10 days.

Neem tree ire Dongoyaro plant and 8 bottles of water. Squeeze some quantity of the leaves in the water. Drink one glassful twice a day.
The already prepared herbal concoction can also be taken.

When to seek medical advice
You need to get help from the  doctor if you notice that the symptom of pile are already accompanied by weakness and lightheadedness since this might indicate loss of significant amount of blood.

Have a wonderful week ahead.
As always I would love to hear from you.

Skin! Skin!! Skin!!!
Who doesn’t want a beautiful? We all spend a fortune chasing that elusive perfect skin, it’s so much of a big deal to ladies and guys well some guys. Let’s look at all the things you should know about skincare.
The human skin is the outer covering of the body. Though nearly all human skin is covered with hair follicles, it can appear hairless. To achieve that perfect skin, you must have a regimen or a way you want to take care of the skin to achieve that youthful, beautiful skin.

Basics of skincare
You need to follow these basics religiously to achieve that perfect skin. And who says the perfect skin should cost millions, you can achieve that youthful, perfect skin using products from your kitchen.

The purpose of a cleanser or soap is to surround, loosen and make it easy to remove dirt, debris, germs, excess oils and left-over products applied to the skin or face. Unfortunately, there are harmful effects of cleansers on the skin. Often people think their skin isn’t  clean unless it feels dry and tight after they wash it. Instead of spending a huge amount on cleansers, you can make your one and they are as effective as store bought ones.
Raw Honey Cleanser.
All you need is 1 tablespoon of honey and 1teaspoon of baking powder. Mix together into a paste and massage in2 damp skin for 1minute. Rinse with warm water and finish with a cold splash to close the cuticles.
Or you  can use 1 ripe tomato with 2 tablespoon of milk and 2 tablespoon of lemon, lime, orange. Mix it together and use it to wash your face.
Oil cleanse is also very effective that would be discussed in a later post.

Toners are meant to remove all remaining traces of oil, make up and dirt. It balances the pH of your skin and prepares it for Moisturizing.
A simple recipe for a toner is a teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a cup of water. (ACV is very acidic a little goes a long way).

Moisturizing is an essential step in good skincare. An effective Moisturizer will have a combination of ingredients that
1. Cut down damage from free radicals.
2. Help the cells to function normally.
3. Replenish the skin’s natural ingredient that help maintain it’s structure.
You won’t believe this but the best Moisturizers are Oils. *Am like what*. But that’s the truth and by oils I mean natural oils such as pure coconut oil, Hemp seed oil(this particular oil is filled with ceramides that make your skin happy), extra virgin Olive oil and butters like shea butter, cocoa butter among others.

This process removes dead skin from cells gently and should be done one or twice a week.
A good recipe is equal parts of sea salt and oil creates a natural scrub that will help remove impurities without stripping excess oil.
A recipe is the sugar face scrub
1 tablespoon organic cane sugar
1-2 drops of water
1-2drops of orange, lemon or lavender essential oil.
Also you can make use of oatmeal(cooked oats) and a tablespoon of water. Apply to the face and let it dry for five minutes and rinse off.
Tomato sugar face scrub
You need 1tomato
1tablespoon of sugar
Cut the tomato in half and dip into the sugar. Rub your face with the tomato in circular motion. Leave it on for 10 minutes.

And lastly you need a sunscreen to protect you from the UV rays.

As always questions and comments are welcomed .
Has anyone tried any of the recipes mentioned above? Feel free to drop other recipes I might have skipped.

Last week, we looked at the uses of Cayenne pepper. The other uses of Cayenne pepper are-

Cayene pepper is often added to massage oils, creams and lotions for use in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism, shingles, psoriases and other skin problem.
Recipe– Add powdered red Cayenne pepper until cream becomes light pink in color. Always remove the seeds when using Cayenne pepper as they are considered toxic.

Cayenne pepper and Immunity
Cayenne peppers’ bright red color signals its high content of beta-carotene or pro-vitamin A.Just two teaspoon of Cayenne pepper provide 47% of the daily value of vitamin A. Often called the anti-infection vitamin, vitamin A is essential for healthy Epithelial tissues including the mucous membranes that line the nasal passages, lungs, intestinal tract and urinary tract and serve as the body’s first line of defense against invading pathogens.

Cayenne pepper and Hair
Cayenne pepper has been used for centuries to promote hair growth….yipee.
A mixture of Cayenne pepper and Olive oil is the best cost effective way to improve the glossiness and fullness of hair as well as promote hair growth. Cayenne pepper improves peripheral blood circulation and nourishes the scalp.
Take 25g of dried Cayenne pepper and put it in 500ml of Olive oil. Use a dark bottle to store the mixture as sunlight destroys the brew. Let it stand for 10 to 15 days. Use this mixture on hair and scalp regularly as you put any normal hair oil. Shampoo and condition afterwards as usual, but make sure to shampoo off the mixture from your hair.
You can also mix 1 to 2 teaspoon of Cayenne pepper and 1 to 2 teaspoon of Olive oil. This will give you a thick paste that you can rub on the base of your scalp and any balding spot. Massage the paste thoroughly. Cover your head with shower cap and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Later, rinse it thoroughly. The Olive oil neutrilizes the heat from Cayenne.
How it works for hair.
Cayenne pepper works by irritating the scalp. This irritation causes an increase of blood flow room your head, which is a fundamental aspect of hair growth.  I can’t wait to try this particular recipe. It has been tried and tested by hair bloggers like Yahya of Pochahontas hair secrets and many Naturals.

How to loose weight with Cayenne pepper
Beyonce gave an interview on how she lost weight for her role in Dreamgirls. She used the master cleanse diet. Which consist of fasting for some days taking only the diet which consists of Lemon juice, Maple syrup and water.

To relieve toothache.
Pour a bit of Cayenne pepper oil on a piece of cotton. Press the cotton all over the aching tooth and the surrounding gum. The toothache should subside after a couple of minutes.
For constipation
Drinking a Glass of water with a little less than an eighth of a teaspoon of Cayenne pepper in it can also cure Constipation.

To make Cayenne pepper oil
Using fresh pepper, simply put them in a container and cover with oil, seal and let it sit for 10 days. Remove the pepper and keep the oil. Or you can add dried Cayenne pepper to any carrier oil of your choice such as

Olive oil, castor oil, almond oil…
Something different
For pests
Put a heaping tablespoon of dried and powdered Cayenne pepper in a shallow pan over a low flame and allow the fumes to pervade the air. Mice, rats, even coackroaches( I hate roaches) abhor the fumes which is perfectly safe for humans and pests. Definitely gonna try this one.

Have a wonderful week ahead.
